Tips on Identifying Early Signs of Termite Presence in Cabinetry and Preventive Measures to Protect Against Infestations
What Causes Termites?
Termites are attracted to environments that provide food, moisture, and shelter. They typically enter homes through cracks, gaps, or openings around windows and doors. Drawn to wood and moisture, termites are often lured in by leaking pipes, poor drainage, or wood near the foundation. Once inside, they burrow into the wood and establish colonies. Even small openings around window trims and doors can provide entry points, allowing termites to infest wooden cabinets and start building colonies.
Preventive Measures
1. Eliminate Moisture
Termites are attracted to moist environments. Ensure that your kitchen cabinets and surrounding areas remain dry. Fix any leaky pipes, sinks, or drains, and maintain proper ventilation.
2. Use ENVPLAS® Board
When installing new cabinetry, opt for anti-termite materials or wood treated with termiticides to prevent infestations.
Signs of Termites in Your Home
1. Swarmers (Flying Termites)
If you see winged termites or discarded wings near windows, doors, or in the kitchen area, it’s a sign termites are actively seeking new nesting areas.
2. Hollow Wood
Tap on the wood of your cabinets. If it sounds hollow, termites may have eaten the inside of the wood. You might also notice bubbling or blistered wood.
